Lube, Oil, & Filter Change

Lube Oil & Filter Changes Service

Oil provides lubrication to the engine alleviating friction, as well as wear and tear, internally. It also acts as a cooling agent for the engine while absorbing particle debris from the combustion process. Those particles are then filtered out of the oil through the oil filter. Maintaining clean oil and proper oil levels in the car will ensure that the parts of the engine don't wear out faster than they should. Scott's Auto Center recommends changing the vehicle's oil every 3,000-5,000 miles, depending on driving. This mileage amount may change for electric-hybrid vehicles.

The Air Filter on your car cleans the air entering the engine. The Air Filter keeps out bugs, dirt, road debris and other contaminants such as chemicals emitted from the engine. Scott's Auto Center recommends to have the Air Filter changed every 10,000-15,000 miles, or at least once a year.

How do you know if you need a repair?

There are several apparent signs that one should look for to determine when their vehicle's oil or air filter needs to be changed!

  • If the oil appears dark and dirty, then the car should be given an oil hanged.
  • An illuminated Oil Change light may appear on your dashboard, when the oil requires changing. In more seriousness, a Check Engine light could appear, indicating high risk of engine damage, due to lack of lubrication (oil).
  • If you smell gasoline when you start the car, changing your oil could be necessary.
  • A misfiring engine or a car that does not easily start up may indicate the Air Filter needs to be replaced.
  • Excessive vibrations, while the car is running, as well as coughing and popping sounds are signs of a damaged or dirty spark plug, which consequently is the result of a clogged air filter.
  • If the Air Filter appears dark with dirt and dust, it will require replacing. A clean Air Filter should have a white or off-white appearance.
  • If you smell gasoline when you start the car, changing your Air Filter could be necessary.
What may cause the problem and how can you prevent it?

Oil and Air Filter changes are a normal part of car maintenance and should be expected. However, if you do a lot of city driving where there is heavy construction or smog you might need to get your oil changed more frequently because there is more pollution in the air. You can prevent engine problems by continuing with your scheduled car maintenance servicing, as well as acting upon warning signs that you notice while driving.
