Starting, Charging, & Batteries

Battery Maintenance Servicing

The car battery's main job is to start all the electrical functions of the car through a large jolt of electricity. It creates this power by transforming chemical energy into electrical energy which it then regulates over a period of time, to keep the engine functioning properly. This is a small part that does a lot of heavy lifting so proper maintenance is key. If you are properly caring for your vehicle and you are purchasing a mid to high quality car battery, the battery should last around three to five years, before it needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, many people find that their car battery only lasts one to two years. This can be a sign that the battery is made from poor quality materials, but it can also be a symptom of poor battery maintenance. If you follow the steps listed below in the preventative maintenance section your battery can perform at its peak for years!

What may cause the problem and how can you prevent it?

Checking the battery's terminals for corrosion build up is a good preventative trick. Corrosion buildup on terminals can hinder, or even cease, communication between the car and battery. Corrosion is most commonly found on the terminals, and has the appearance of white and blue gunk-like powder. You could have your car serviced for it or you can even try to remove it yourself!

Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 cup of very hot water. An old toothbrush is a great household tool to aid in the removal of the corrosion, on the battery terminal! Simply, dip the toothbrush into the mixture. When you have completed the job, spray down the area with water, so as to clean off the baking soda.

Checking to ensure that the car battery cables are properly secured, is one method to prevent a problem. When the car battery has loose cables the car can short-circuit! The car battery should be completely stationary, not having the ability to move around, while the vehicle is in motion. In addition, it is a good idea to get a battery tester. A battery tester provides the ability to check the health of your battery. Consider the purchase of a Battery Charger, which may assist in maintaining the longevity of the battery's lifespan.

More About Starting, Charging & Batteries:

There are a things to keep in mind when it comes to the health of your battery. First, if you are following the above steps for battery maintenance and you are still going through a battery every year, you might need to see a mechanic about an issue with the car's alternator; it isn't fully charging the battery. Second, it's important to remember that cold weather is going to affect the chemical reactions taking place inside the battery, so it's always a good idea to keep the car in the garage when the weather starts to hover around or below freezing.
