Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Tire Maintenance Service

The Tire Pressure Monitoring system exists as an early warning system for tire underinflation. Vehicles that don't have properly inflated tires are more susceptible to blowouts which can cause a major accident. There are two types of TPMS systems: Direct and Indirect. A Direct TPMS uses pressure sensors within each tire to measure the level of inflation. An Indirect TPMS uses wheel speed sensors to measure the rate of revolutions which is then interpreted as wheel size by the computer systems of a vehicle. An underinflated tire or tires will begin to register as smaller in size which will trigger a warning in the system. Much like any other part of a vehicle, this system will get old and need to be replaced. When this happens, a warning light will come on to alert the owner that the vehicle needs to be serviced. Here at Scott's, we can make that process easy and affordable so call us today to set up an appointment!

How do you know if you need a repair?

Tires will begin to wear unevenly if there is an issue with tire pressure or the alignment of your vehicle. The alignment or “toe” of the cars wheels refers to the slight slant, in or out, that the tire maintains in order to drive properly. You can look at the tread of your tires in order to judge if the tires are wearing unevenly. If not addressed, the tire/tires can wear down to the point of being bald in some cases which has the potential to cause a major car accident and/or hydroplaning.

What may cause the problem and how can you prevent it?

Proper tire maintenance is essential to the overall efficiency of a vehicle. Tires should be periodically balanced and checked for proper tire pressure. They should also be routinely rotated (every 5,000-8,000 miles) because the tires on the front of the vehicle wear at a different rate than the tires on the back. Proper balancing and rotation of a vehicle's tires ensures more even wear and tear; therefore, the tires will last much longer. Properly inflated tires will increase the gas mileage of the vehicle while also contributing to even tread wear. Schedule your tire services with us today!

More About Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Whether the indication of a tire issue has arose out of a dashboard light coming on as an alert or the tire goes completely flat, servicing is extremely important. Driving without proper air in a tire can completely ruin a wheel rim, which replacing can be costly. If the issue is that the system is not working correctly, and the air in the tires is just fine, the system may only require a simple reset, which can be handled by a service technician easily and quickly.
